Charlotte's Two Major Health Systems
The Charlotte metro is served by two dominant hospital systems:
Atrium Health (formerly Carolinas HealthCare System): The larger system, with Carolinas Medical Center (Level I trauma, flagship hospital), Atrium Health Pineville, Atrium Health Union, Atrium Health Lincoln, and a network of specialty and urgent care across the metro and into SC. CMC is one of the largest hospitals in the Carolinas with comprehensive specialty care.
Novant Health: Presbyterian Medical Center (Charlotte flagship), Novant Health Matthews, Novant Health Huntersville, and a strong outpatient/specialty network. Excellent reputation for cardiac care and women's services.

What Level I Trauma vs Community Hospital Means
Buyers sometimes underweight this distinction. Here's why it matters in practice:
Level I Trauma Center: Can handle any injury or illness, 24/7. Full surgical team on-site at all hours. Neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, vascular surgery available immediately. Where you want to be for heart attacks, strokes, major accidents, and complex cardiac events.
Community Hospital (non-trauma): Excellent for most emergencies — chest pain evaluation, fractures, infections, pneumonia. Will stabilize and transfer to Level I if needed for complex cases. Transfer adds 30–60+ minutes to time-sensitive conditions where minutes matter (stroke, heart attack).
The stroke math: Stroke treatment outcomes degrade significantly beyond 60–90 minutes from onset to treatment. A community 40 minutes from a Level I center, where an ambulance must first evaluate, stabilize, and potentially transfer, puts some residents outside optimal treatment windows. This is not a reason to rule out Trilogy or Carolina Riverside — but it's a real factor for buyers with cardiac history or stroke risk factors.
Establishing Care Before You Need It
For every community on the list, the practical advice is the same — and most buyers don't do it:
Identify your new primary care physician before you close — don't wait until you're sick
Transfer medical records to the new PCP before the move is complete
Identify the nearest urgent care to your community for minor illnesses and injuries (not ER-level but faster than an ER)
If you have a cardiologist, neurologist, or specialist — find your new specialist before you need them; Charlotte's top practices have new patient waits of 3–6 months
Know your insurance network: Medicare Advantage plans vary significantly by county and system — confirm your plan covers both Atrium and Novant before you commit to either network exclusively
