Quick Reference
The first 30 days checklist: Florida driver's license (DMV appointment required), vehicle registration transfer, voter registration update, mail forwarding or permanent address change with USPS, bank/financial account address updates, insurance policy address updates (home, auto, life), establish Florida primary care relationship, transfer prescriptions to local pharmacy, golf cart insurance purchase, Villages welcome center orientation, and introduce yourself to neighbors. The Villages welcome center offers a structured new resident orientation — attend it.
The first 90 days checklist: homestead exemption filing (if in the window), estate planning review with Florida attorney (wills and trusts should be updated for Florida law), Medicare/supplement insurance review for Florida network coverage, HOA/CDD district documentation review, golf cart registration and decal (required by The Villages), join 3–5 clubs or activities to build social foundation, get your Spectrum or AT&T service transferred, and set up your recycling and trash pickup schedule. The 90-day mark is typically when new residents feel genuinely settled — the initial adjustment period is over and the lifestyle begins in earnest.
The Financial Picture
Homestead exemption deadline is March 1 of the year following your permanent move. File immediately if you close late in the year. The exemption saves $1,000–$2,000+/year and locks in the Save Our Homes 3% assessment cap. Missing this deadline costs you a full year.
Florida driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of establishing Florida residency. Vehicle registration transfer follows. Both are required for Florida domicile establishment and the homestead exemption application.

Golf cart purchase or rental: most new residents rent for 30–60 days before buying to understand their usage patterns. Villages Golf Cars is the official dealer; independent dealers offer new and refurbished options. Cart insurance is required before first use.
Healthcare setup is the most time-sensitive task. Establishing a Florida primary care provider and transferring prescriptions to a local pharmacy should happen within the first 30 days — before you need them.
