Sun City Huntley — Amenities

Two rec centers, 45 holes of golf, miles of trails — what $143/month actually covers

Two Recreation Centers

Sun City Huntley's scale justifies an amenity model most 55+ communities cannot support: two separate, full-service recreation centers serving different geographic zones of the community. Both are included in the standard HOA fee — no additional access charges.

Heritage Oaks Golf Club — 45 Holes

HOA-Owned Golf — A Significant Advantage

Heritage Oaks Golf Club is owned by the Sun City Huntley HOA, not a third-party operator. This means member pricing stays reasonable — approximately $30–40 per round with member rates, cart fees additional. Compare this to communities where golf is operated by a private company with no obligation to keep resident rates low. The 45-hole configuration (three separate 18-hole loops share some holes) means tee time availability is rarely an issue even during peak season.

Course Configuration

The 45-hole layout at Heritage Oaks is organized across three distinct 9-hole loops that can be combined in various 18-hole configurations. The courses wind through the community, which means golf course lots are distributed throughout all phases of development — not concentrated in one section.

Member Pricing Model

Sun City Huntley residents who are HOA members pay member rates at Heritage Oaks. Rates are substantially below public walking rates at comparable courses. The golf club is independently managed under the HOA umbrella, with its own budget separate from the community HOA budget.

Outdoor Amenities

Walking and Biking Trails

Approximately 25+ miles of dedicated pedestrian and bike paths wind through the community. Most are separated from vehicle traffic. Connects both rec centers and loops through the golf course corridors.

Tennis and Pickleball Courts

Multiple hard-surface courts at both recreation center locations. Pickleball has grown significantly — court time is scheduled through the residents' pickleball club to manage demand during peak hours.

Bocce and Lawn Bowling

Dedicated bocce courts are a social hub, particularly for residents who enjoy organized league play. The bocce club runs leagues throughout the warmer months.

Community Garden

Resident garden plots available for individual use. Plot availability varies by year — wait lists are common. Gardening club coordinates shared knowledge and seasonal events.

Nature Areas

Portions of the 2,700-acre property include natural prairie restoration and wetland areas. The McHenry County landscape allows for more green space than typical suburban 55+ communities closer to the city.

Fishing Ponds

Stocked retention ponds throughout the community allow casual fishing for residents. No license required for community ponds under Illinois rules for private residential waters.

Indoor Amenities — Both Centers

Indoor Swimming Pools

Both Freedom Center and Liberty Center have indoor pools with lap lanes and open swim areas. Freedom Center's pool is larger. Water aerobics classes run daily at both facilities throughout the year.

Fitness Centers

Full cardio and resistance equipment at both locations. Personal training available for an additional fee through independent certified trainers who have access agreements with the HOA.

Craft and Hobby Studios

Dedicated woodworking shop, ceramics studio with kilns, art studios with natural light, and a sewing and quilting room. Equipment is community-owned and maintained by HOA.

Ballrooms and Event Spaces

Freedom Center's main ballroom seats several hundred residents for formal events. Catering kitchen on-site for community dinners, dances, and private events. Private reservations available to residents.

Library and Card Rooms

Resident-run library with book lending and exchange. Dedicated card rooms for bridge, poker, mahjong, and other table games — in regular organized use by club leagues.

Billiards Room

Multiple billiards tables at Freedom Center. Available for casual drop-in play and organized league matches. Billiards club runs formal leagues and tournaments throughout the year.

Community Clubs and Organizations

Sun City Huntley's resident population supports over 100 organized clubs. Social life here is genuinely resident-driven — the HOA provides the facilities, but residents organize nearly everything else.
