Denver 55+ Healthcare: A County-by-County Checklist

Colorado’s hospital landscape has gone through more mergers and renames in the last five years than almost any other state on our list. UCHealth, HCA HealthONE, and Intermountain Health (formerly SCL Health) are the three systems that matter for the 14 verified 55+ communities in this market — here is which one realistically covers which county, organized as a decision checklist rather than a marketing brochure.

Before we get into the county breakdown, one honest disclosure: hospital ownership and even hospital names change in Colorado more often than buyers expect. North Suburban Medical Center in Thornton was rebranded HCA HealthONE Mountain Ridge in 2024. SCL Health became Intermountain Health after a 2022–2023 merger, and facilities like Good Samaritan Medical Center and Lutheran Medical Center picked up new “Intermountain Health” names in the process. None of that changes the physical location of the building or (usually) the quality of care, but it means a name you read in an older blog post, a builder’s sales brochure, or even a family member’s old surgery paperwork may no longer match the current legal name. Confirm current ownership and in-network status directly with the hospital or your Medicare Advantage carrier before you buy based on healthcare proximity alone.

The Checklist: Which System Covers Which County

Use this as a first-pass filter, then verify against the specific community and your own insurance network before treating any of it as settled.

Broomfield & Weld County

Anthem Ranch, Skyestone, Regency at NorthSkye

This is the lowest-property-tax grouping on the hub page, and it also happens to have a relatively new hospital directly in it: UCHealth Broomfield Hospital opened to serve Broomfield and Boulder counties. Erie, where Regency at NorthSkye sits, is a bit further out along the Denver-Boulder corridor, closer to the Longmont side of UCHealth’s footprint.

Hospital / SystemTypeRelative Position
UCHealth Broomfield HospitalFull-service hospital, UCHealth systemIn Broomfield — the closest full-service option for Anthem Ranch and Skyestone
UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital (Longmont)Community hospital, UCHealth systemLongmont, a reasonable distance from Erie/NorthSkye and the northern Weld County edge
Intermountain Health Good Samaritan Hospital (Lafayette)Full-service hospital, Intermountain Health (formerly SCL Health / Exempla)Lafayette, an alternate option for the Broomfield/Erie corridor

Good Samaritan Hospital has changed corporate names twice in recent years (Exempla → SCL Health → Intermountain Health) as part of industry consolidation. The building and location haven’t moved, but confirm the current legal name and network status when you call your insurer.

Douglas County

Regency at Montaine (Castle Rock), Verona (Highlands Ranch)

Douglas County is well served relative to its population, with two full-service hospitals realistically in range depending on which community you’re comparing.

Hospital / SystemTypeRelative Position
UCHealth Highlands Ranch HospitalFull-service hospital, UCHealth systemHighlands Ranch — the closest option for Verona
HCA HealthONE Sky Ridge (Lone Tree)Full-service hospital, HCA HealthONE systemLone Tree, between Highlands Ranch and Castle Rock — a strong option for both Verona and Regency at Montaine

Castle Rock itself has grown quickly; newer urgent care and outpatient facilities may have opened closer to Regency at Montaine since this was written. Ask the sales office and your insurer for the current nearest options rather than relying solely on this list.

Arapahoe & Adams County

Heritage Eagle Bend, Heather Gardens, Hilltop at Inspiration (Aurora) · Heritage Todd Creek, Courtyards at Lupton Village (Thornton)

This grouping spans two counties and two HCA HealthONE facilities that have each been through a corporate rebrand. The name most buyers and long-time residents still use — The Medical Center of Aurora and North Suburban Medical Center — may not match current signage or paperwork.

Hospital / SystemTypeRelative Position
HCA HealthONE Aurora (formerly The Medical Center of Aurora)Full-service hospital, HCA HealthONE systemAurora — the realistic option for Heritage Eagle Bend, Heather Gardens, and Hilltop at Inspiration
HCA HealthONE Mountain Ridge (formerly North Suburban Medical Center)Full-service hospital, HCA HealthONE systemThornton — the realistic option for Heritage Todd Creek and Courtyards at Lupton Village
UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital (Anschutz Medical Campus)Academic medical centerAurora — a major regional referral center within reach of all five of these communities

Both HCA renames took effect in 2024; older reviews, directories, and even some GPS listings may still show the previous names. Verify the current name and in-network status directly.

Denver County

Windsor Gardens, Fairway Villas at Green Valley Ranch, Reserve at Green Valley Ranch

Denver County carries the highest property tax rate of the four groupings, but it is also the most centrally located for hospital access — with one caveat for the Green Valley Ranch communities near the airport, which are covered by a freestanding emergency room rather than a full hospital campus.

Hospital / SystemTypeRelative Position
HCA HealthONE Rose (formerly Rose Medical Center)Full-service hospital, HCA HealthONE systemCentral Denver — the closest full-service hospital for Windsor Gardens
UCHealth Green Valley Ranch (freestanding emergency room)Freestanding ER, UCHealth systemGreen Valley Ranch — convenient for immediate emergency stabilization for Fairway Villas and Reserve at GVR, but not a full inpatient hospital
UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital (Anschutz Medical Campus)Academic medical centerAurora — the nearest full inpatient/academic campus for anything the Green Valley Ranch freestanding ER would need to transfer
Be specific about “freestanding ER” if you’re considering Green Valley Ranch. A freestanding emergency room can stabilize and treat many emergencies, but a patient requiring hospital admission, surgery, or extended inpatient care would typically be transferred to a full hospital campus. If a Green Valley Ranch community is on your shortlist, ask directly how transfers to Anschutz or another full-service hospital work in practice, and what the transport time realistically is.
The bigger pattern worth rememberingColorado’s hospital market has consolidated into essentially three systems — UCHealth, HCA HealthONE, and Intermountain Health — and all three have renamed facilities in the past few years as part of that consolidation. This is not unique to Denver, but it is more active here than in some other retirement markets. Whatever you read about “which hospital is near which community,” treat the facility’s location as more durable than its current corporate name, and re-verify both before closing.

What This Means When You’re Comparing Communities

If hospital proximity is a top priority, Douglas County (Regency at Montaine, Verona) and the Aurora/Thornton grouping (Heritage Eagle Bend, Heather Gardens, Hilltop at Inspiration, Heritage Todd Creek, Courtyards at Lupton Village) each have a full-service hospital genuinely nearby, plus a path to the Anschutz academic campus for anything more complex. Broomfield/Weld communities are well served by UCHealth’s relatively new Broomfield hospital. The Green Valley Ranch communities in Denver County are the one grouping where we’d encourage you to ask more specific questions — the freestanding ER is real and useful, but it is not the same thing as a full hospital on your doorstep.

Whichever community you’re considering, verify two things directly before you buy: which Medicare Advantage plans are currently in-network at the specific hospital nearest you (not just “the system”), and whether that hospital’s emergency department carries the specialty certifications you might personally need, such as a cardiac catheterization lab or stroke center designation. Given how often Colorado hospitals have changed ownership recently, treat any information more than a year or two old as a starting point for verification, not a final answer.
